Steve Laube gave a wonderful keynote speech to open the event. I had the immense privilege of meeting Daniel Schwabauer and taking two classes with him on ‘Story, Character, and Prose.’ He’s an incredible writing teacher. Check out the online course he offers. I also really enjoyed the two sessions from Donald Maas on Series Characters.
The conference organizers made everyone feel welcome and kept things running smoothly. They offered many opportunities to pitch a novel to agents and publishers, or just to meet and chat with them. The awards banquet was over the top, with many people dressing as their favorite characters from SciFi or Fantasy novels.
Anyone hoping to publish clean SciFi or Fantasy should definitely check out this organization.
Catching up on some old business. After meeting Eva Marie Everson (the founder and CEO of Word Weavers) last fall at a conference, I joined the program. Word Weavers brings together small groups who read and critique each other’s writing samples once a month. I can’t say enough good things about this organization. Eva Marie is wonderful, she runs a tight but warm-hearted ship, and the leadership also provides so many other helpful resources via email and facebook.
I am in both a local general writing group and a Zoom call SciFi/Fantasy one. The critiques have been excellent, and everyone is so supportive of each other. This is especially helpful for new writers.
